Italian new wave, rare bands and records
Share
Between the late 1970s and the mid-1980s, Italy was the setting for an extraordinarily vibrant new wave period. Alongside the scene's mainstays (such as Diaframma, Litfiba, CCCP, and Krisma), a dense underground scene developed, encompassing synth-pop, post-punk, darkwave, and experimental electronics.
Many of these projects released records in very small quantities on independent labels (I.R.A., Materiali Sonori, KinderGarten Records, Spittle), now considered genuine collector's gems.
Rare Groups and Albums to Rediscover
1. Gaznevada — Sick Soundtrack (1980)
Pioneers of the Bolognese scene connected to the '77 movement and DAMS. Sick Soundtrack is a hysterical, razor-sharp masterpiece: a blend of rhythmic punk, Devo-style punk-wave, and acidic electronics.
The rare track/record: The very first vinyl pressing for the Italian Records label with the original cover is among the most sought-after.
2. Neon — Rituals / Tapes of Decade (1980-1985)
Led by Marcello Michelotti in Florence, Neon were among the leading interpreters of Italian synth-wave and cold, minimalist post-punk.
Rare records: The debut EP Information of Death (1980) or the very first 7" singles released by the Urgent Label/KinderGarten Records label.
3. Frigidaire Tango — The Dressed-Up Anarchy (1982)
Hailing from Veneto (Bassano del Grappa), they combined art-punk, glam, and Joy Division influences with complex rhythms and refined arrangements.
Rare record: The original vinyl of The Dressed-Up Anarchy (1982, Young Records). A modern, dark, and elegant work that went far too unnoticed at the time.
4. Central Unit — Central Unit (1983)
A Bolognese project strongly influenced by Tuxedomoon, Japan, and avant-garde synthetic textures.
Rare record: The self-titled album Central Unit (1983), an elegant, ethereal synth-pop work, pressed in very few copies and now a cult item.
5. Underground Life — Cross (1983) / Hunting for a God (1984)
Led by the poetic mind of Giancarlo Onorato in Monza, they represent the most intellectual, decadent, and auteur-driven side of Italian darkwave.
Rare records: The EPs and LPs released in the early 1980s on labels such as Toast Records or I.R.A., in very limited runs.
6. Kirlian Camera — It Doesn't Matter, Now (1983)
Founded by Angelo Bergamini in Piacenza, the band became a legend of European darkwave and electro-industrial music.
Rare record: The debut single/EP It Doesn't Matter, Now (1983) on the Virgin/Italian Records label, a milestone of Italian dark synth-pop.
7. Pankow — Throw Out the Order (1984)
Originally from Florence, they were absolute pioneers of EBM (Electronic Body Music) and industrial rock in Italy, later becoming famous throughout Europe and the United States.
Rare record: The early vinyl EPs released by Spittle Records, packed with aggressive electronics, sampling, and minimalist pulses.
