Boxes or shelves? What’s the best way to store records?
Share
Boxes and shelves are excellent for convenience, but the absolute best way to store and preserve vinyl records requires a few essential precautions to prevent them from deteriorating over time.
1. Vertical Position (The Golden Rule)
Vinyl records should always be stored vertically, just like books on a bookshelf.
Never stack them horizontally: The weight of the records stacked on top of one another creates pressure that warps the records underneath and causes color or imprint transfer onto the covers.
Minimal tilt: Keep the records as straight as possible; prolonged tilting will bend the vinyl over time.
2. Shelves or Boxes: Which One to Choose?
Cube shelves (e.g., IKEA Kallax):
Pros: Ideal for medium-sized or large collections. They distribute weight well and allow you to divide the records into sections, reducing lateral pressure.
Cons: They leave the front of the records exposed to dust and sunlight.
Boxes and Crates (Wooden or Plastic Crates):
Pros: Perfect for the "crate digging" style (flipping through records from above). Easy to move.
Cons: You may overfill them, causing the records to tilt, or leave them too empty, allowing the vinyl to slide around.
3. Essential Protection
Outer Sleeves: Transparent polypropylene sleeves to protect the covers from wear over time, friction, and dust.
Anti-static Inner Sleeves: Replace inexpensive paper inner sleeves with anti-static polyethylene sleeves to prevent scratching the record whenever it is removed.
4. Environment and Temperature
Temperature: Store them in a cool environment (between 15°C and 21°C).
Humidity and Light: Keep them away from direct heat sources (radiators, heaters), high humidity (to prevent mold on the covers), and direct sunlight (which fades the artwork and warps the plastic).
